Isabella Rice-Hayward Smith

Isabella Smith (née Rice-Hayward), "Grandma Belle" or "Ma Belle", was born in West Derby, a suburb of Liverpool.

Her father was John Arthur Rice-Hayward and her mother was Gertrude Sarah Rice-Hayward (née Kirkham).(See Ancestors).

Belle's was married to Tom Smith. Their children were Isabel Marjorie, Audrey Irene, Thomas Arnold, Cyril Allan, Joyce, Pamela Edith and Sheelah. Ma Belle died in 1976.

She had an elder sister Gertrude Dorothy who was born and died in 1891. She also had a younger sister Maude Alice, who was born in 1895.

Their early-married life occurred at the advent of WWI, and Tom may have been in the Royal Marines at the time. The records show that at that time they were living in Ashbourne Road, Aigburth; an area on the south side of Liverpool.

Grandma Belle's father, John Arthur Rice-Hayward was born in 1856. Belle's mother, Gertrude Sarah Kirkham, was born 1871 in Liverpool. At that time the family were living in Bolton Street in Central Liverpool where her father, Henry Kirkham, was a publican.
